‘Quite an Honor’: Umoja Village Unveils Sign Honoring Richard Johnson Jr.

An Aiken icon and civil rights leader’s legacy will always live on with a sign that bears his name.

“This is a historic moment in the city of Aiken,” Richard Johnson Jr. said.

Johnson was honored and recognized for his efforts with a sign at Umoja Village’s new location at 831 Hayne Ave. on Friday. The new location will be called the Richard Johnson Jr. Resource Center.

Johnson, who serves on the board of Umoja Village, said he had no idea that the new sign would bear his name, or he would be honored.
